OHIO POLITICS

THE ARREST JULY 21 OF POWERFUL REPUBLICAN HOUSE SPEAKER LARRY HOUSEHOLDER IN A $60 MILLION FEDERAL BRIBERY CASE HAS UPENDED BOTH POLITICS AND POLICY-MAKING IN OHIO.  THE OHIO HOUSE REMOVED HOUSEHOLDER FROM HIS POST YESTERDAY IN A UNANIMOUS, BIPARTISAN VOTE. REPRESENTATIVE BOB CUPP OF LIMA WAS ELECTED AS HIS SUCCESSOR. HOUSEHOLDER AND FOUR ASSOCIATES ARRESTED WITH HIM WERE INDICTED YESTERDAY, EACH CHARGED WITH A COUNT OF RACKETEERING. HIS LAWYER HASN'T COMMENTED. PROSECUTORS CALL IT THE LARGEST MONEY-LAUNDERING SCHEME IN STATE HISTORY. THE SCANDAL COULD HAVE REPERCUSSIONS FOR NOVEMBER’S HIGH-STAKES PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
