St. Marys Council Approves Supplemental Funding, Spring Street Agreement

St. Marys City Council approved supplemental appropriations and an agreement with the Ohio Department of Transportation for the next phase of the Spring Street reconstruction project during its meeting Monday.

Mayor Joe Hurlburt said the supplemental appropriations total $571,354 across 14 requests from city departments. He said the additional money will help departments balance their books by the end of the year.

The largest request was $200,000 for the electric department to cover additional diesel fuel needed to operate turbine No. 7. Council suspended the rules and passed the appropriations as an emergency measure.

Council also approved an agreement with ODOT for improvements to Spring Street from Main Street to the bridge over the St. Marys River. The work is part of Phase 4 of the reconstruction project.

Hurlburt said the project is expected to cost approximately $4 million and is primarily funded by state and federal grants. The city’s estimated share is $130,729. He said the city would be responsible for the cost of items it chooses beyond the project’s standard design, such as decorative light fixtures or an archway.

In other business, a resolution accepting the 2026 Auglaize County Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan received its first reading. Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency Director Troy Anderson attended the meeting to explain the plan. The resolution will move to a second reading at the next council meeting.

Council also held a second reading of a resolution accepting amounts and rates determined by the budget commission and authorizing the necessary tax levies.
