Tree Identification Hike Available Throughout October Near St. Marys

Heritage Trails Park District is giving visitors a chance to test their tree identification skills while enjoying the changing fall colors throughout October.

A self-guided Tree Identification Hike is available at the Dr. Elizabeth Yahl Kuffner Nature Preserve, located just north of St. Marys in Auglaize County.

Interpretive signs have been placed along the trail for the entire month to help visitors identify different tree species and learn facts about each one.

The 15.8-acre wooded preserve includes a grove of pawpaw trees along with examples of the Ohio buckeye, the state tree of Ohio.

Visitors can complete the hike at their own pace using the preserve’s new boardwalk trail surface, which Heritage Trails Park District says is suitable for a range of ages and hiking abilities.

Leashed pets are also welcome.

The Dr. Elizabeth Yahl Kuffner Nature Preserve is located at 14840 County Road 66A in St. Marys.
