World Mental Health Day Brings Reminder That Mental Well-Being Can Affect Everyday Health

World Mental Health Day will be observed Saturday, October 10, bringing renewed attention to the role mental well-being can play in overall health.

While discussions about physical health often focus on diet and exercise, mental health can also influence everyday habits including sleep, motivation, eating patterns and physical activity.

TOPS Club, a nonprofit weight-management support organization, is using this year’s observance to encourage people to consider the connection between mental and physical health.

The organization notes that stress, anxiety, low mood and poor sleep can make it harder for people to maintain healthy routines.

One example is emotional eating.

People do not always eat because they are physically hungry. Stress, boredom, fatigue or feeling overwhelmed can also influence eating habits.

Rather than automatically viewing those moments as a lack of willpower, the organization encourages people to consider what they may actually be feeling or needing at the time.

Mental exhaustion can also affect motivation.

When someone is overwhelmed or not sleeping well, habits such as exercise, meal planning or other parts of a normal routine can become more difficult to maintain.

Strategies such as getting adequate sleep, managing stress, spending time with supportive people, taking breaks and seeking professional help when needed can all be part of maintaining overall health.

Another concern is how people respond to setbacks.

A difficult day or a change in routine can sometimes lead to frustration and additional stress. Health advocates encourage viewing those moments as temporary rather than allowing one setback to outweigh longer-term progress.

The broader message ahead of World Mental Health Day is that health involves more than a single number, goal or measurement.

Paying attention to stress, sleep, emotional well-being and support systems can be just as important as other parts of a healthy lifestyle.
