WCSM Concludes “Back to School” Week at Minster Local Schools

WCSM wrapped up its five-day “Back to School” series at Minster Local Schools on Friday, highlighting classroom instruction, district leadership, technology, student activities and plans for the future.

WCSM’s Kevin Sandler opened the program with second-grade teachers Courtney Imwalle and Brittany Treon. They discussed the district’s emphasis on reading comprehension, phonics, writing and math, along with efforts to help students become more confident and independent learners.

Minster Board of Education member Rich Bruns reflected on his experience as a Minster graduate and his seventh year on the board. Bruns discussed the board’s responsibilities, including district policy, finances and representing the community. He also reviewed the district’s recent land exchange with the Village of Minster and the need to plan for future enrollment growth.

Technology Coordinator Doug Axe explained how technology supports instruction throughout the district. Axe discussed student devices, cybersecurity, digital citizenship and the importance of teaching students to use online resources safely and responsibly. He also said the district is studying how artificial intelligence may be used appropriately in education.

The program also featured Minster’s Juggling Club. Adviser Craig Muhlenkamp and students Joanna Topp and Jacob discussed learning to juggle balls, rings and clubs, along with balancing, unicycle riding and other performance skills. Muhlenkamp said perseverance is among the most important lessons students gain because mastering the activities requires repeated practice.

Superintendent Josh Meyer closed the week with an update on the district’s land exchange and possible building expansion. Meyer said increasing enrollment and the growing need for special education, counseling, speech and therapy spaces are among the reasons the district is exploring additional facilities.

Enrollment projections indicate Minster could grow from the lower 900s to nearly 1,100 students during the next eight to 10 years. Meyer said no final building plans, costs or ballot proposal have been determined. A district task force will continue meeting and gathering community feedback during the coming months.

Meyer also highlighted Minster’s five-star state report card and the district’s strong participation in clubs, activities and athletics. He said programs such as FFA, band, student leadership and juggling provide important opportunities that are not reflected in state report-card measurements.

Friday’s program concluded WCSM’s weeklong visit to Minster Local Schools. WCSM thanks the district’s students, staff members and administrators for participating. The station’s next “Back to School” series will originate from St. Marys City Schools in October.
