Bluffton Historical Society Plans John Dillinger Bank Robbery Reenactment

The Bluffton Ohio Historical Society will recreate one of the community’s most infamous moments during a special public event on Saturday, October 10.

The reenactment will tell the story of John Dillinger’s August 14, 1933, robbery of Citizens National Bank in Bluffton. Dillinger entered the bank during daylight hours and escaped with approximately $2,100.

The historically accurate presentation is scheduled to begin at 11:55 a.m. at the intersection of Main and Cherry streets. Fred Steiner wrote the script, and Kevin Gratz will narrate as volunteers portray members of Dillinger’s gang and eyewitnesses to the robbery.

Motorcyclists participating in the Joe Bayliff U.S. 30 Harley-Davidson “Wake the Dead” ride are expected to arrive in Bluffton between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Organizers say more than 50 motorcycles could participate if weather conditions are favorable.

Main Street will be closed to traffic during the event. Area youth will judge motorcycles for three awards: “Public Enemy Number 1,” “Accomplice” and “Outlaw.”

The reenactment is open to the public. If inclement weather prevents the outdoor presentation, the event will move to the Bluffton Middle School Cafetorium at 116 South Jackson Street.
