Celina Man Sentenced to Three Years in Prison in Van Wert County Abduction Case

A 20 year old Celina man has been sentenced to three years in prison in a Van Wert County case involving abduction, a firearm and assault.

Tristan Nicholas Thompson was sentenced Wednesday in Van Wert County Common Pleas Court to 36 months in prison for abduction, a third degree felony, and 36 months for having weapons while under disability, also a third degree felony. He also received 180 days in jail for assault, a first degree misdemeanor.

The sentences will be served concurrently, meaning Thompson’s total prison term is 36 months. He was given credit for 119 days already served and was ordered to pay court costs.

Court records provide additional details about the charges. A bill of information filed in July alleges the offenses occurred on March 2, 2026, in Van Wert County.

The abduction charge states Thompson restrained the liberty of another person by force or threat under circumstances that created a risk of physical harm or placed the person in fear. The misdemeanor assault charge alleges Thompson caused or attempted to cause physical harm to the same person.

The weapons under disability charge stems from Thompson’s previous juvenile record in Mercer County. Court documents state Thompson had been adjudicated a delinquent child in 2023 for burglary and robbery, which prohibited him from knowingly acquiring, possessing, carrying or using a firearm or dangerous ordnance.

Thompson was originally arraigned in May on kidnapping, a first degree felony, along with having weapons while under disability and assault. At that time, he pleaded not guilty and was held on a $250,000 cash or surety bond with an order to have no contact with the victim.

In July, Thompson pleaded guilty to a prosecutor’s bill of information charging him with abduction instead of the original kidnapping charge, along with the weapons and assault offenses. A pre-sentence investigation was then ordered ahead of Wednesday’s sentencing
