A Monday afternoon house fire in Van Wert left a home a total loss and killed several pets.

Van Wert firefighters were dispatched around 3:41 p.m. to a home in the 400 block of Race Street after receiving a report of a possible structure fire.

Van Wert Fire Chief Jon Jones said crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from one corner of the home.

There was initially concern that someone might still be inside, but firefighters confirmed that the occupant had left the residence before the fire began and later returned to the scene.

Jones said crews were able to quickly attack the fire and bring it under control.

A total of 16 cats were kept at the home. Firefighters were able to rescue some of the animals, but several did not survive.

Jones said the fire appears to have started in the kitchen area, although investigators have not determined what caused it.

The home sustained significant fire and smoke damage and Jones said the occupant was unable to return to the residence.

Van Wert Police and Van Wert County CERT assisted firefighters with traffic control at the scene.

The fire remains under investigation.
