Grand Lake Health System Offers Free Blood Pressure Screenings at Mercer County Fair

Grand Lake Health System is using its presence at the Mercer County Fair to encourage visitors to take a few minutes to check an important measure of their health.

Kathy Ackley of Grand Lake Health System joined Spectrum live from the fair Thursday and said the health system has a booth in the commercial building offering free blood pressure screenings. Screenings are generally available from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., with some evening availability depending on staffing.

Ackley said the screenings are being conducted by nurses who can also answer questions from fairgoers about their blood pressure readings.

She emphasized that high blood pressure can go unnoticed, saying many people may have elevated readings without realizing it. Ackley said routine screening can help identify a potential problem before more serious complications develop.

Ackley said maintaining a healthy weight, eating well and exercising can help control blood pressure, but family history can also play a significant role. She stressed that people who require medication should not view that as a failure, particularly when genetics contribute to elevated blood pressure.

Untreated high blood pressure can contribute to cardiovascular complications, including stroke. Ackley said people should pay close attention to possible stroke symptoms and remember the acronym FAST — facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulties and time to call 911.

She stressed that people experiencing potential stroke symptoms should call 911 rather than trying to drive themselves to the hospital. Emergency medical crews can begin treatment immediately and alert the hospital while the patient is being transported.

Ackley also discussed stroke care available through Grand Lake Health System, saying the hospital is stroke certified and its emergency department staff are trained to evaluate patients. Telemedicine technology can also connect local patients and staff with stroke specialists who can help determine whether additional treatment or transfer to another facility is necessary.

Grand Lake Health System’s booth and free blood pressure screenings will be available during the Mercer County Fair, giving visitors an opportunity to receive a quick health check while attending the fair.
