Ohio State Highway Patrol reminds drivers: Securing loads saves lives

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding commercial drivers, construction haulers and companies transporting materials to make sure loads are properly secured before traveling on Ohio roadways.

The Patrol says troopers are seeing an increase in incidents involving debris falling from trucks and trailers as summer construction traffic continues and the back-to-school season approaches.

Officials say unsecured loads can create sudden hazards for other motorists, including flying debris and objects left in the roadway. Even small items such as rocks or pieces of loose material can damage vehicles, block a driver’s view or contribute to crashes.

“Making sure a load is properly secured isn’t just a regulatory requirement, it’s a responsibility that directly impacts every driver who shares the road,” said Lieutenant Jacob D. Landis with the Patrol’s Licensing and Commercial Standards section.

The Patrol is encouraging drivers and companies to inspect trucks, trailers and equipment before each trip. Inspections should include checking that load covers are in place, tie-downs are secure and materials are properly contained.

Troopers will continue monitoring commercial traffic across Ohio and enforcing violations involving unsecured loads, debris-related hazards and equipment safety.
