Faber Encourages Ohioans To Read Declaration Of Independence During 250th Celebration

As the country prepares to celebrate Independence Day, Ohio Auditor of State Keith Faber, a Republican from Celina, is encouraging residents to take time to read the Declaration of Independence and reflect on the sacrifices behind the nation’s founding. Faber joined WCSM's Kevin Sandler on-air on Thursday Morning

Faber said the document offers important perspective on what the holiday is truly about, including the grievances the colonists listed against British rule and the risks taken by those who signed it.

“Get out and read the Declaration of Independence,” Faber said. “It’s going to give you a pretty good perspective of what this is all about.”

During the interview, Faber highlighted the personal cost faced by many of the signers, saying they pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor knowing they could be treated as traitors by the British. He pointed to stories of signers who were captured, lost homes, lost property or saw family members affected by the Revolutionary War.

“These men really sacrificed for us just by signing the Declaration, much less the stories of the Revolutionary War,” Faber said.

Faber also referenced Benjamin Franklin’s famous warning after the Constitutional Convention, when Franklin was asked what kind of government had been created. Faber quoted Franklin’s response: “A republic, if you can keep it.”

Faber said the quote remains meaningful today as the nation continues to debate its future and the direction of government.

The conversation also touched on America’s long relationship with Great Britain. Faber noted that while the United States and Britain fought again in the War of 1812, the two countries eventually became close allies. He also referenced King Charles III’s 2026 address to a joint meeting of Congress as part of the 250th anniversary year.

Asked about his own Independence Day plans, Faber said he plans to stay close to home in Mercer County after spending much of the previous week traveling around the state.

“We’re probably going to be out on the lake, probably going to watch the fireworks out on the lake,” Faber said. “Look for me around town. We will certainly be here all weekend and enjoying the 4th of July here in Mercer County.”

Faber said both of his children are also expected to be home, making it a special weekend for his family.

He closed by encouraging parents to read the Declaration with their children and to remember not only the founders, but also the military, public safety officials and first responders who continue to serve the country and their communities.

“It’s a great day to be an American,” Faber said, “and as always, it’s a great day to live in Mercer County.”
