Celina Schools names new high school principal, boys basketball coach

CELINA, Ohio — Celina City Schools has announced two major hires following Monday night’s Board of Education meeting, welcoming a new high school principal and varsity boys basketball coach.

Superintendent Brooke Gessler said both candidates stood out during the interview process for how well their philosophies align with the district’s direction and goals for students.

Jeff Amspoker has been named the new principal at Celina High School. He brings 21 years of experience in education, including time as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. A Columbus native and graduate of Bowling Green State University, Amspoker taught Spanish for 15 years before moving into administration.

District officials say he is committed to building a school culture where students feel valued and respected while preparing for their futures through both academic success and personal growth. He is looking forward to connecting with students, staff, and families in the Celina community.

Meanwhile, Michael Piatt has been selected as the new varsity boys basketball coach.

Piatt brings a strong record of success, with a career mark of 190–179, including a 95–48 record over the past five seasons at Miami University–Hamilton. During that stretch, his teams made five consecutive USCAA National Tournament appearances, earning two Elite Eight finishes, two runner-up finishes, and one national championship.

He was also inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame as an assistant coach on Ohio Wesleyan University’s 1988 national championship team.

School officials say Piatt is known for emphasizing accountability, toughness, and a team-first mentality, while building strong relationships with student-athletes. His vision includes a fast-paced style of play and strengthening ties between the program and the Celina community.
