Storms leave damage, flooding across Mercer, Auglaize, Darke, and Shelby counties

Severe thunderstorms moved through the region earlier this evening, leaving behind widespread damage, dangerous flooding, and power infrastructure issues across Mercer, Auglaize, Darke, and Shelby counties.

The storms brought wind gusts up to 60 mph along with hail reaching 1 to 1.25 inches in diameter.

Emergency officials reported numerous downed trees, utility poles, and power lines throughout Mercer and Auglaize counties. Crews have been working to clear debris and restore service, and residents were asked to stay clear of affected areas to allow responders to do their jobs safely.

State Route 364 was shut down near Otterbein due to storm damage.

Flooding created especially hazardous conditions in Celina, where Wayne Street and Mill Street saw up to 3 feet of standing water. Additional flooding was reported on Mackinaw and in other low-lying areas.

Mercer County EMA Director Chad Wilrath reported downed poles along Brockman Road, along with scattered tree damage and minor flooding following the storms.

In Auglaize County, EMA Director Troy Anderson confirmed significant damage in St. Marys Township, particularly on the south side of Grand Lake St. Marys. At least one barn was destroyed, and several others were damaged. Multiple utility poles—both city and Midwest Electric—were reported down or leaning. Transmission line poles along State Route 119, which had been repaired after a previous storm, were also reported leaning again.

Anderson said some areas received around .85 inches of rain—or more—in roughly 30 minutes, leading to rapid and severe localized flooding.

Authorities continue to urge caution as cleanup efforts move forward and some roadways remain impacted.
