Marion Local Board Accepts Resignations, Approves Hires and Receives Updates

MARIA STEIN — The Marion Local Board of Education handled several personnel items and received a number of program updates during its regular meeting Monday, according to Superintendent Mike Pohlman.

Pohlman said the board accepted the resignation of Beth Seger and the resignation and retirement of June Moeller, who served as elementary secretary and school nurse.

The board also approved multiple hires and assignments. Pohlman said Julia Overman was hired as high school guidance counselor, effective next school year. Richard Bellman was hired as a custodian beginning May 4. Seger was also hired as EMS coordinator to complete the remainder of the school year. The board approved Cindy Mader and Brittany Plyman as substitutes in cashier and study hall monitor positions to finish the school year.

On the coaching and volunteer side, Pohlman said the board accepted the resignation of freshman girls volleyball coach Amy Willis and approved a transfer for Jonathan Smith from co assistant baseball coach to assistant baseball coach. Wesley Shane was approved as a volunteer for the track program.

The board approved open enrollment policy and student handbooks presented by building principals. Pohlman said the board also approved a Tri Star advisory board referral to increase reserve capital funds to 10 dollars per student and approved the purchase of multiple Chromebooks.

Technology Coordinator Michelle Mescher provided an update on fishing simulations conducted at the school, with Pohlman saying the program had “a lot of success.”

High school principal Tim Goodwin updated the board on the success of FFA Week, the cheerleaders placing third at state, and the bowling team’s tournament run. Elementary principal Kelly Tobey reported on an upcoming read a thon and said math teachers have been evaluating new curriculum.

Treasurer Ryan Goldsmith also reported on recent donations, including 405 dollars each from St. Henry Bank and OPAC to help cover throwback uniforms worn by the Marion Local boys basketball team for what Pohlman called the final game played in “The Hangar.”

Pohlman said the district’s next regular monthly board meeting is scheduled for April 13 at 7 p.m.

He also noted Marion Local will be featured on Spectrum Thursday with the district’s new head volleyball coach, Marsha Muller, and WCSM is scheduled to broadcast remote back to school shows from Marion Local March 16 through 19, highlighting staff and district programs.
