Scam alert: Celina Police warns of AI voice cloning calls

SCAM ALERT: CELINA POLICE WARNS OF AI VOICE CLONING CALLS

CELINA, OHIO
The Celina Police Department is warning residents about a growing phone scam where criminals use artificial intelligence to clone the voices of loved ones.

Police say scammers can grab short audio clips from social media posts, videos, or even voicemail greetings, then use that audio to create a convincing voice replica. Victims may receive a call that sounds like a child, grandchild, or family member claiming they are in trouble and need money immediately. The goal is to create panic and urgency so people act fast without verifying.

Common scam scenarios
Scammers often claim:
• They were in an accident and need money for bail or help
• They are stranded somewhere and need cash right now
• They were arrested and cannot talk long, and tell you not to contact other family members
Police say callers may beg you to stay on the phone and pressure you to keep the situation secret.

How to protect yourself
Celina Police recommends these steps to avoid becoming a victim:
• Pause and verify: Hang up and call your loved one directly using a number you already have
• Ask a personal question only they would know
• Create a family safe word for real emergencies
• Limit public voice recordings online and review social media privacy settings
• Never send money, gift cards, or wire transfers based only on a phone call

If you get a suspicious call
• Do not share personal or financial information
• Report it to your local law enforcement agency
• You can also report scams to the Federal Trade Commission at “ReportFraud dot FTC dot gov”

Police say these scams rely on fear and urgency. Taking a moment to slow down and verify can help prevent financial loss and emotional distress, especially for older adults who are often targeted.
