Homeless Individual Accused of Starting Structure Fire in Union City

Union City — Union City firefighters responded to a structure fire early this morning at a vacant property.

According to the Union City Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the fire at approximately 1:00 a.m.

The incident was investigated by the Union City Police Department, which determined that a homeless individual had entered the vacant building and started a fire using a makeshift fireplace. Investigators say an item fell into the fire, causing the structure to ignite.

Officers were able to locate the suspect, who admitted to starting the fire, according to police.

Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Ansonia, Rossburg, and Liberty Township.

Firefighters also faced challenges during the response due to multiple fire hydrants being out of service on Oak Street in both Ohio and Indiana. Officials say the hydrants were frozen, resulting in a limited water supply at the scene.

No injuries were reported. The extent of the damage has not been released. The incident remains under investigation.
