Structural Collapse Forces Road Closure Near St. John the Baptist Church in Maria Stein

Structural Collapse Forces Road Closure Near St. John the Baptist Church in Maria Stein

High winds have caused a partial structural collapse at St. John the Baptist Church in Maria Stein, further damaging the historic building that was already heavily impacted by a massive fire earlier this year.

Officials say the church’s west wall collapsed, severely compromising the stability of the remaining structure. Structural engineers and crews with FIRST ONSITE warn that the church tower could also fail and potentially fall onto State Route 119.

As a result, SR-119 is closed between St. Johns Road and Kremer Road. The Chickasaw Fire Department and the Ohio Department of Transportation have shut down the roadway as a safety precaution. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

The church suffered extensive damage during a major fire on May 29, and discussions about the future of the building have been ongoing. A Building Committee question-and-answer presentation was held Wednesday, outlining possible next steps following the fire.

Now, demolition planning is underway due to the latest collapse. Options being evaluated include removing the upper portion of the tower or proceeding with a full demolition of the remaining structure, depending on continued structural assessments and the availability of specialized demolition crews.

Father Ken and the St. John Building Committee are working with FIRST ONSITE and the Archdiocese to coordinate next steps.

Officials stress that all church parking lots and surrounding property remain restricted, and the public should not enter the area due to ongoing safety concerns.
