Grand Lake Health Challenge: 20th Anniversary

Grand Lake Health System is preparing to launch the 20th anniversary edition of its Grand Health Challenge in 2026, continuing a community wellness effort that began in 2006. The program was created after hospital leaders identified rising obesity and other long-term health concerns in the region.

Dr. McNaughton, who helped develop the challenge from the beginning, said the initiative originally started as a simple weight-loss competition. Over time, it developed into a much broader health and wellness program aimed at building sustainable habits for individuals and teams throughout the community.

Since its launch, the Grand Health Challenge has engaged more than 7,000 participants, with a combined 55,000 pounds lost.

A Multi-Disciplinary Team Behind the Challenge

A key part of the challenge’s success has been the diverse team that plans and supports the program each year. In addition to Community Outreach staff, the challenge is guided by:

  • Registered dietitians who lead nutrition education and meal-planning sessions

  • Exercise physiologists who help participants build safe, effective fitness routines

  • Representatives from the YMCA and local fitness leaders who expand program opportunities

Dr. McNaughton said this variety ensures the challenge offers something for everyone. “We all bring different ideas and experiences to the table,” she explained. “That helps us create programming that works across ages, interests, and fitness levels.”

For 2026, participants will have access to:

  • The Grand Lake Health Fitness Center for select activities

  • Local YMCA facilities

  • Educational sessions led by Grand Lake Health dietitians

  • Special events celebrating the program’s 20th year

How to Register for the 2026 Challenge

Organizers outlined simple guidelines for anyone interested in joining next year’s event:

1. Register before January 5

Participants must sign up by the January 5 deadline. Registration options include:

  • GrandLakeHealth.org

  • Direct contact with Community Outreach coordinator Nicole This

  • Venmo, where the $10 entry fee can be submitted

    • Entry is $15 for those opting to receive the official challenge t-shirt (a $5 add-on)

Teams and individual entries are welcome.

2. Complete all three in-person weigh-ins

Participants must attend:

  • The initial weigh-in

  • The mid-challenge weigh-in

  • The final weigh-in

Several weigh-in locations will be available, allowing participants to choose a site that’s convenient.

3. No additional mandatory requirements

Beyond registering and completing the three weigh-ins, all other activities — fitness center sessions, YMCA access, classes, and special events — are optional but encouraged.

Looking Ahead to a Landmark Year

Grand Lake Health System says the 20th anniversary challenge will feature expanded programming, new event partnerships, and enhanced community engagement. After two decades of progress, thousands of participants, and tens of thousands of pounds lost, the program continues to focus on the same mission: supporting a healthier Grand Lake region, one challenge at a time.
