The Mercer County Republican Party has appointed Dr. Alyssa A. Tobe to serve as the next Mercer County Coroner. The vote was taken Monday night during the party’s regular Central Committee meeting at the Richardson-Bretz Building in Celina.

Dr. Tobe will complete the unexpired term of longtime Coroner Dr. Timothy Heinrichs, who resigned on October 10 after 36 years of service. The party also recognized Dr. James Reichert for his 16 years as Deputy Coroner.

The Mercer County Commissioners issued a temporary appointment following Heinrichs’ resignation, but the final decision was made by the Central Committee as required by law.

The party’s Enhancement Committee considered two applicants — Dr. Reichert and Dr. Tobe — and determined both were qualified. However, Dr. Reichert withdrew late last week, stating that increased demands of his surgical practice and family priorities would prevent him from fulfilling the duties of the office.

With Reichert’s withdrawal, the committee moved forward with the recommendation of Dr. Tobe, who was approved by an overwhelming vote.

Party officials say Dr. Tobe brings an impressive healthcare background and a strong plan for the Coroner’s Office. They note her commitment to working with grieving families, law enforcement, EMS, healthcare providers, and the Prosecutor’s Office.

Dr. Tobe has also committed to running for election to the position in the next term, ensuring continuity in the office.

The appointment was announced in a statement signed by Mercer County Republican Party Chair Robert J. Hibner.
