Lynn town marshal killed while deploying stop sticks during police pursuit

Lynn Town Marshal Bradley Fisher was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by a stolen van during a police pursuit in Randolph County.

Indiana State Police say the pursuit began at approximately 8:30 a.m. when a Randolph County sheriff’s deputy spotted a van near County Road 400 West and County Road 50 South that matched the description of a reported stolen vehicle.

Police identified the driver as 34-year-old Maci Marquelle Atkinson of Winchester, who authorities say had active felony warrants. When the deputy attempted a high-risk traffic stop, the van fled east on U.S. 36 toward Lynn.

Fisher positioned himself near the intersection of U.S. 27 and U.S. 36 to deploy tire-deflation devices ahead of the pursuit.

State police say Fisher was standing behind his department vehicle and attempting to move toward a ditch when the van veered toward him and struck him head-on. The van continued east, went out of control and struck a dump truck, ending the pursuit.

Fisher was transported to Ascension St. Vincent Randolph Hospital in Winchester, where he died from his injuries. He had served with the Lynn Police Department for 27 years.

Atkinson was transported to a hospital for treatment before being taken to the Randolph County Jail on the existing felony warrant. Indiana State Police say additional charges are expected as the investigation continues. No additional charges connected to Fisher’s death had been announced in the available reports.

The Town of Lynn’s official website also lists Fisher as the town’s street superintendent and a captain with the Lynn Fire Department.

Randolph Southern School Corporation will hold a vigil in Fisher’s honor at 7 p.m. Thursday on the baseball diamond in Lynn.
