The City of St. Marys Water Treatment Plant is making a change to the disinfection process used in the city’s water system.

The plant is transitioning from chloramine formation to breakpoint chlorination using free chlorine. City officials said the change is part of an effort to improve disinfection effectiveness and maintain high water quality throughout the distribution system.

During the transition, customers may notice a stronger chlorine smell or taste than they have experienced in the past.

Officials emphasized that the change does not indicate a problem with the city’s water quality or safety. The water remains safe for drinking and other normal uses and will continue to meet state and federal drinking-water standards.

Customers who use specialized water-treatment equipment should take additional precautions. This includes residents and businesses using dialysis systems, aquariums or other applications affected by the difference between chloraminated water and free chlorine.

Those customers should consult the manufacturer or service provider for their equipment to make sure it is properly adjusted.
