LIMA, OHIO: The University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball program is placing a greater emphasis on competitiveness and attention to detail as it prepares for the upcoming season.

Head coach Richard Westerlund said 12 of the Racers’ games last season came down to the final buzzer. UNOH finished 5-7 in those contests, leaving the program focused on finding ways to finish more close games successfully.

Westerlund said the coaching staff has reviewed nearly every part of the program, including practices, workouts, meetings and locker-room responsibilities.

The Racers are also working to improve accountability throughout the roster. Westerlund said veteran players have taken a larger role in reinforcing team expectations and helping newer players understand the program’s culture.

UNOH has also emphasized making every player feel valued, regardless of playing time or position on the depth chart.

Westerlund is entering his fourth season as head coach of the Racers. Before joining UNOH, he previously led the men’s basketball program at Wright State University–Lake Campus.
