A Spencerville man is facing a third-degree felony after authorities say he failed to stop for a Mercer County sheriff’s deputy and later crashed into another vehicle.

Craig R. Blevins, 35, is charged with failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer.

According to court documents, a deputy observed a vehicle traveling approximately 70 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone on Celina-Mendon Road at approximately 9:29 p.m. July 11.

The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle allegedly slowed near the stop sign at Siler Road but did not come to a complete stop before accelerating. The deputy later lost sight of the vehicle and ended the attempted stop.

Mercer County dispatch later reported a crash near Celina-Mendon Road and U.S. 33. A witness told authorities the vehicle had traveled through a field before returning to the roadway and striking another vehicle that was stopped at the intersection.

Blevins was taken to Mercer Health for an examination before being booked into the Mercer County Detention Facility.

Bond was set at $50,000 with 10% allowed. Conditions prohibit Blevins from driving, consuming alcohol or drugs, and entering establishments that serve alcohol by the drink. He is also subject to random testing.

The court appointed Thomas J. Lucente Jr. to represent Blevins. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, July 17, at 10 a.m.
