Flags across Ohio have been ordered lowered to half-staff in memory of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

Governor Mike DeWine issued the order in accordance with a presidential proclamation following Graham’s death at the age of 71.

The order applies to the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio at all public buildings and grounds across the state. Flags will remain lowered through Saturday evening, July 18.

Graham served in Congress for more than 31 years, including 23 years in the U.S. Senate. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1994 before winning election to the Senate in 2002.

He also completed more than three decades of military service and retired as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Graham served as an attorney in the Air Force and remained closely involved in national defense and foreign policy issues throughout his congressional career.

At the time of his death, Graham was serving as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.
