The City of St. Marys will soon begin the process of selecting a new law director.

Mayor Joe Hurlburt reported that Zach Ferrall has submitted his resignation effective July 31. Ferrall is leaving the city position to become a magistrate with the Auglaize County Common Pleas Court.

Ferrall has spent approximately 12 years serving the city, first as assistant law director and later as the elected law director.

Because the law director’s position is held by a Republican, the Auglaize County Republican Central Committee will accept applications and select a replacement.

Ferrall won the Republican primary earlier this year for the Auglaize County Common Pleas Court probate, juvenile and domestic relations judgeship. He is seeking to succeed longtime Judge Mark E. Spees.

In other business, St. Marys City Council scheduled a public hearing for July 27 at 6:15 p.m. in the council chambers at the Municipal Building, located at 101 West Spring Street.

The hearing will address a request to rezone approximately 0.437 acres from single-family residential to general commercial. The property is located between Wayne and Perry streets and between Clinton and South streets.

Mayor Hurlburt also reminded bicycle, e-bike and electric scooter riders that they must obey traffic laws, including stopping at stop signs. A city ordinance approved in 2025 also requires riders age 17 and younger to wear helmets.
