AUGLAIZE COUNTY — The Auglaize County Health Department is currently investigating an uptick in gastrointestinal illness cases impacting local residents.

According to public health officials, some of these reported cases have been traced back to a microscopic parasite called Cyclospora. The parasite causes an intestinal illness known as Cyclosporiasis.

To help curb the spread of the illness and protect local families, health officials are urging residents to take immediate preventative actions when preparing food and washing their hands.

• Wash Your Hands: Always wash your hands with soap and running water for no less than 20 seconds.

• Wash All Produce: Thoroughly wash and scrub all fruits and vegetables under running cool water before eating them.

• Check Every Source: Contamination can happen anywhere. Be sure to wash all produce, whether it was purchased at a local grocery store, bought at a farmers market, or harvested directly from your home garden.
