Chelsey Vann Discusses Wound Care Services On Spectrum

Grand Lake Wound Care Center Clinical Program Director Chelsey Vann joined Kevin Sandler on Spectrum to discuss the importance of treating chronic and non-healing wounds before they become more serious.

Vann said the Grand Lake Wound Care Center, which is part of Grand Lake Health System, offers advanced care for wounds that are not healing properly. That includes diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, burns, radiation injuries, post-surgical complications, pressure ulcers, skin tears and other wounds that may not improve within 2 to 4 weeks.

Vann said people should not ignore warning signs such as continued drainage, increased swelling, redness, pain or a foul odor. She said even a small wound can become more serious quickly, especially for people with diabetes, poor circulation or other health concerns.

A major focus of the interview was diabetic foot care. Vann encouraged people with diabetes to check their feet every day, including between the toes, and to avoid going barefoot. She said neuropathy can prevent some patients from feeling injuries, which means a wound may be more serious than it appears.

The Wound Care Center also works with primary care providers and other specialists to create a treatment plan for each patient. Vann said the center uses a team approach and considers factors such as circulation, nutrition, medications and infection risk.

Vann also discussed advanced treatment options available locally, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy and platelet rich plasma, also known as PRP. She said hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help certain wounds by improving the delivery of oxygen-rich blood to affected areas. PRP uses a patient’s own blood in a patch form to help support the healing process.

According to Vann, the Grand Lake Wound Care Center has received 23 national recognitions and has reached a 94 percent healing rate. She said the center’s team includes providers with backgrounds in general surgery, podiatry and family medicine.

Patients coming in for a first appointment are encouraged to bring a photo ID, insurance card and an active medication list. Vann said referrals are encouraged and may be required by some insurance plans, but people with concerns can still call the center with questions.
