West Ohio CAP Highlights Fatherhood Initiative And Summer Assistance Programs On Spectrum

West Ohio Community Action Partnership representatives Ashley Wagnild and Shelby Ashtenfelter joined WCSM’s Spectrum with host Kevin Sandler to discuss programs available for families in the region, including a new Fatherhood Initiative for Auglaize County residents.

Ashtenfelter said the Fatherhood Initiative is designed for dads and father figures, including grandfathers, brothers, uncles, cousins, neighbors or any male figure helping raise a child.

The program focuses on parenting, co-parenting, communication, relationship building, family history, mental health, physical health and breaking cycles from the past.

The classes are free and include 12 sessions, with flexible scheduling available. Ashtenfelter said classes can be held in the morning, afternoon, evening or even on weekends depending on the needs of participants.

Those who complete the classes receive a certificate and may also take part in up to three months of case management. Through case management, WOCAP can help connect participants with resources for employment, housing, mental health counseling and other needs.

Participants may also be eligible for up to $300 worth of items to help with barriers. That could include school supplies, clothing, baby supplies or other family needs. Gas cards may also be available for transportation needs, and free childcare is provided during class time.

The program is open to fathers and father figures with children under the age of 18. Expecting fathers are also welcome.

Information sessions are being held in Auglaize County. One session will be in Wapakoneta at the Auglaize County Public Library from 1 to 3 PM. Another session will be held June 29th from noon to 2 PM at the St. Marys Community Public Library. The events will include free food, games, activities and door prizes.

Wagnild also discussed other WOCAP programs, including the Summer Crisis Program, which begins July 1st. That program can help eligible residents with electric bills, cooling needs, air conditioning units, fans and AC repair.

The Summer Crisis Program is available for qualifying residents, including those age 60 and older, people with a medical condition, and those facing disconnection or transferring services.

WOCAP also offers weatherization services in Auglaize and Mercer counties. The program can provide up to $8,000 in home improvements to help make homes more energy efficient. That may include insulation, sealing drafts, crawl space work and furnace-related improvements.

Wagnild encouraged residents not to wait until utilities are shut off before asking for help. She said it is easier to help keep service connected than to get service restored after a shutoff.
