Multiple Funnel Clouds Reported Across Mercer and Auglaize Counties; No Damage Reported

CELINA, Ohio — Multiple reports of funnel clouds across Mercer and Auglaize counties Tuesday evening prompted the issuance of a Tornado Warning, although no tornado touchdowns or damage have been confirmed.

The warning, which has since expired, was issued after several funnel clouds were reported by spotters and members of the public. One of the most notable sightings was captured by viewer LeeAnn Rohrer along Staeger Road near Celina. The video showed a well-defined funnel cloud extending close to the ground.

Meteorologists said the warning was warranted because the funnel cloud displayed clear signs of rotation and appeared to be very close to becoming a tornado.

A funnel cloud is a rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm but does not reach the ground. It is only classified as a tornado if it makes contact with the surface. Because funnel clouds can quickly develop into tornadoes, residents are urged to seek shelter immediately if one is spotted.

Officials also emphasized the importance of public storm reports, noting that western Ohio has limited radar coverage in some areas. Reports from the public can help forecasters issue timely warnings to protect the community.

Mercer County Emergency Management Agency Director Chad Wilrath said there have been no reports of tornado touchdowns or storm damage associated with Tuesday evening's funnel cloud sightings.

The National Weather Service is expected to review the reports as part of its assessment of the severe weather event.
