Celina Mayor Jeff Hazel Updates Storm Cleanup, Utility Response And City Projects

Celina Mayor Jeff Hazel says the recent storm that caused damage across parts of the city has been determined to be a straight-line wind event, not a tornado.

Hazel joined Spectrum and said the storm brought wind gusts of more than 90 miles per hour and caused significant damage, especially along Havemann Road.

According to Hazel, the storm snapped eight 75-foot transmission poles and damaged several additional distribution poles. He said that led to the initial power outage across the city.

Celina electric crews worked to redirect power and restore service to most residents. Hazel said mutual aid also played an important role, with other municipal electric communities helping provide manpower and materials, including transmission poles.

Some businesses along Havemann Road remained without power into the weekend, with most restored by Saturday evening and the final few restored by late Sunday morning.

Hazel said the cleanup in the hardest-hit area is largely complete, while electric crews continue final work. Across the city, he said several homes had damage from trees, shingles and debris.

Hazel said one of the most important takeaways is that no injuries were reported.

He also encouraged residents to prepare now for future storms. That includes backing up important records, scanning receipts and tax documents, photographing major purchases for insurance purposes and keeping important items in a safe or secure location.

Hazel also reminded residents to pay attention to weather sirens, avoid glass during severe weather and get to a safe location, such as a basement or interior room.

With another round of severe weather possible, Hazel urged residents to stay weather aware and be prepared to take action if warnings are issued.

Hazel also praised city employees, saying many were called out while the storm was still ongoing. He said electric, public works and other city crews helped clear roads, restore power and maintain services for the rest of the community.

The mayor also discussed several ongoing city priorities, including infrastructure, parks, public safety and future planning. Hazel said the city is reviewing proposals connected to the future fire station project and continues to focus on long-term projects that will benefit Celina for years to come.

Hazel said Celina continues to grow, with housing remaining a major need. He said the city wants to manage that growth carefully while maintaining Celina’s character and quality of life.

Hazel also highlighted the importance of Grand Lake, parks, recreation and local amenities as part of what makes Celina a vibrant community.

He said city government’s role is to serve the public, maintain transparency and invest tax dollars back into projects and services that benefit the community.
