Governor’s Cup Regatta Returns To Grand Lake June 20th And 21st

The 2026 Governor’s Cup Regatta will return to Grand Lake on June 20th and 21st, bringing powerboat racing back to the lake for a full weekend of family friendly activities.

Organizers Rich McNaughton, Craig Obringer and Colton Obringer joined WCSM’s Spectrum with host Kevin Sandler to preview this year’s event, which is being presented by Veterans Forever Incorporated and a team of local volunteers and supporters.

The two day event will feature boat racing on Grand Lake. Saturday will include the Eastern Divisional Championship through the American Power Boat Association, while Sunday will feature the Governor’s Cup race.

Organizers say the Eastern Divisional Championship is a major race for competitors because of the points available to racers. Around 60 race teams are expected this year, which would double the number of boats from last year’s event.

The regatta returned last year after an extended absence, and organizers say the response from racers and the community was overwhelmingly positive.

McNaughton said the event is free to attend and designed for the whole family. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, though some bleachers will also be available. There will also be a special viewing area for veterans, along with VIP areas for major sponsors.

The weekend will include food trucks, craft vendors and a car show on Sunday. Organizers say even people who are new to boat racing can enjoy the event because of the speed, sound and atmosphere around the lake.

Several types of boats are expected to race, with nine categories planned. Boats will range from smaller one liter classes to larger two and a half liter stock and modified boats. An unlimited boat is also expected to be on the water for testing, though it will not be part of the races.

Some boats are expected to reach speeds of more than 100 miles per hour, with organizers saying speeds could reach 120 to 130 miles per hour.

Organizers say Grand Lake is a strong location for boat racing because of the layout of the lake, the park area and the access for racers. They also say the event brings people to the area, filling hotels and supporting local restaurants and businesses.

Safety planning is also a major part of the event. Organizers say EMS, rescue crews, tow boats and race officials will be in place throughout the weekend.
