Ohio Jobless Claims Drop, Continued Claims Rise Slightly

Ohioans filed fewer new unemployment claims last week, according to updated numbers from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

ODJFS reported 4,754 initial unemployment claims were filed in Ohio from Sunday, May 17, through Saturday, May 23. That is 900 fewer than the previous week.

The state said approximately 910 of those initial claims have been flagged for more stringent identity verification to help ensure they are not fraudulent.

Continued unemployment claims increased slightly. Ohioans filed 40,552 continued claims during the same week, which was 711 more than the week before.

In all, Ohioans filed 45,306 unemployment claims from May 17 through May 23.

Ohio’s unemployment rate in April was 3.9 percent, compared to the national unemployment rate of 4.3 percent. Ohio’s labor force participation rate was 61.9 percent in April, slightly above the national rate of 61.8 percent.

ODJFS says it continues to work with local workforce development boards and staff to provide employment and training services at 88 OhioMeansJobs Centers across the state.
