Tuesday Night Fire Outside New Knoxville

A rural Auglaize County home sustained extensive damage following a fire Tuesday night in Washington Township.

Firefighters were called to the 6700 block of Holtkamp Road just before 7:30 p.m. According to New Knoxville Fire Chief Jerry Merges, crews arrived to find a good portion of the house fully involved, with flames and smoke coming from the garage area and through the roof.

Merges said firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes. The occupants of the home were able to get out safely, and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters were able to save about 50 percent of the structure from fire damage, but the home sustained smoke and water damage throughout. The garage and a vehicle parked inside were destroyed.

Because there are no fire hydrants in the area, automatic mutual aid was called in for tanker trucks and other equipment. Departments assisting included New Bremen, Buckland, St Marys, and St Marys Township in Auglaize County, along with Van Buren Township in Shelby County.

The Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control, while Auglaize County CERT responded to provide refreshments for first responders.

Crews remained on the scene for about three hours.

Fire and insurance investigators are expected to be at the home Wednesday morning to begin work on determining the cause of the fire and estimating the dollar loss from the damage.
