Older Americans Month Highlights Support Available Through Area Agencies On Aging

May is Older Americans Month, an annual observance recognizing the contributions and resilience of older adults across the country.

This year’s theme is Champion Your Health, encouraging older adults to take steps to support their health, independence and overall well being.

Area Agencies on Aging play a key role in that effort by connecting older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers with services that help them remain safely at home and active in their communities.

Those services can include transportation to medical appointments, nutrition support, home delivered meals, personal care assistance, falls prevention programs, home safety improvements, health and wellness programs, social engagement opportunities, caregiver support and case management.

Officials with USAging say championing your health is not only about personal choices, but also about having access to community services that make those choices possible.

Area Agency on Aging 3, based in Lima, has served older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers for more than 50 years. The agency helps connect individuals and families with programs and services designed to make daily life easier and support independent living.

Older adults and caregivers looking for local services can contact the Eldercare Locator by calling or texting 1 800 677 1116, emailing eldercarelocator@usaging.org, or visiting eldercare.acl.gov.
