Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office Warns Public About Scam Activity

The Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about recent scam activity after two incidents over the past week and a half led to three arrests.

Sheriff’s officials held a press conference Friday to discuss what investigators are seeing locally and to encourage residents to stay alert.

Detective Michael Wiley said the main goal is education and prevention. He said investigators want to keep people from losing money, but if someone does become a victim, they should contact law enforcement as quickly as possible.

Wiley said fast reporting can give investigators a better chance to intervene, make arrests and possibly recover money for victims.

The Sheriff’s Office said the financial impact of scams has been significant. According to Wiley, victims in Auglaize County lost more than one million dollars combined to scams last year. So far in 2026, scam victims have already lost more than 400 thousand dollars.

Wiley said those numbers represent life changing money for many people.

The Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to be cautious, talk with family members about scam warning signs and contact law enforcement if they believe they have been targeted or have already lost money.
