Celina School Board Prioritizes Track Replacement, Facility Upgrades in December Meeting
Celina, OH — The Celina Board of Education focused on construction progress, financial updates, and long-term athletic facility planning during its December meeting. With several major building projects underway and a community fundraising group preparing for its launch, board members worked to establish clear priorities for the upcoming year.
Facilities Director Phil Metz reported steady progress on the elementary school’s exterior brickwork, now 60–70 percent complete. Recent additions include a new safety gate on the playground and plans for a trench drain to address drainage issues near the dumpster area.
At the high school, Metz outlined continued work on drywall, painting, mechanical systems, storm piping, window caulking, and interior masonry. Crews have also begun installing ceiling grids on the third floor. Metz clarified that the Wayne Street intersection improvement required by the state is being managed in cooperation with the city, which could reduce the project’s cost through potential ODOT reimbursement.
Treasurer Michelle Mawer presented November’s financial summaries, highlighting $2.48 million in revenue and $10.32 million in expenditures. The district holds a total balance of $62 million, with $36 million allocated specifically for ongoing building projects.
The board approved several community donations, including:
$5,000 to the Celina High School Caring Closet
$2,250 from the Celina Eagles for the Spirit Squad
$500 each from Mercer Landmark and Cooper’s Farms for Head Start family engagement
$500 from Shin Brothers for TriStar Construction jackets
The board approved standard personnel items and authorized an overnight FFA leadership trip to Columbus on December 17–18.
A major portion of the meeting focused on athletic facility planning to support upcoming fundraising efforts. Board members agreed that the district’s track, described as beyond repair, is among the most pressing needs.
Before a new track can be installed, the board emphasized the necessity of securing both the TriStar building and the Fieldhouse, labeling these repairs Priority #1. The new track was designated Priority #2. They also expressed support for installing underground utilities for a future football field inside the track, even though construction of the field itself is not currently planned.
The board scheduled its organizational meeting for January 12 at 6 p.m. Board member Adam Schleucher was appointed President Pro Tem for the session.
The meeting ended with the board entering executive session.
