Janelle Backs Receives Albert Heckler Award
Celina, OHIO — Jenelle Backs, a dedicated leader and President for the Mercer County Challenger League Baseball Program, received the Albert Heckler Award from the Mercer County Board of Developmental Disabilities on Thursday evening during the annual Mercer DD Appreciation Banquet.
The Albert Heckler Award is an annual award named in honor of Albert Heckler, a longtime community advocate whose passion and tireless work helped to create opportunities for individuals with disabilities across Mercer County. The award aims to recognize individuals that embody the same commitment to enhancing lives, fostering inclusion, and promoting the rights of those with developmental disabilities.
Many of the past award winners have been parents of children with disabilities. Their hard work and advocacy are rooted in the love they have for their child. Through that love – and a deep commitment to serving others – they’ve not only improved the lives of their own families but have also created lasting change within our Mercer County community. Their stories remind us that progress often begins with personal passion and the courage to step into something new. Janelle Backs is exactly that.
“Jenelle has truly gone above and beyond with the Mercer County Challenger League Baseball Program,” said Mercer DD Superintendent, Shawn Thieman. “Her ability to organize all these events and recruit such a large number of players, coaches, buddies, and other helpers is truly impressive. Challenger Baseball would not be what it is today without her.”
Backs serves as the President of the Mercer County Challenger Baseball League, but her volunteer efforts do not stop there. Since taking over the program, she has nearly quadrupled the number of players and launched a new Adult League. Her commitment extends well beyond the diamond – she organizes additional events, such as movie night, swim night, a banquet, and more, building a strong sense of camaraderie among players, coaches, and buddies.
“Thirty years ago, I’m sure you did not envision overseeing a Challenger Baseball League, but here you are – filled with a fire and love ignited by your son, Kurtis,” continued Thieman. “Your impact on participants and everyone who comes out to see a Challenger League Game is immeasurable.”
Awards were also given to Mercer DD staff members celebrating milestone years of services at the banquet. Honorees included: Rajean Hedrick, Administrative Assistant – 30 years of service; Tarra Hemmelgarn, Medicaid and Provider Services Manager – 10 years of service; and Summer Hauenstein, Early Intervention Service Coordinator – 5 years of service.
