KROGER LAYOFFS

MORE THAN 400 KROGER EMPLOYEES NEXPECTEDLY RECEIVED PINK SLIPS AT A BAKED-GOODS PRODUCTION FACILITY IN COLUMBUS, MONDAY MORNING.  EMPLOYEES TELL US THEY WERE TOLD TO COME TO THE CONVENTION CENTER AT 8 THIS MORNING FOR A WORK MEETING. THEY SAY WITHIN THREE MINUTES OF THAT MEETING, KROGER MANAGEMENT TOLD THEM THEIR FACTORY WAS CLOSING, AND THAT THEY WERE ALL OUT OF A JOB.
KROGER SAYS EMPLOYEES WILL BE PAID FOR THE NEXT TWO MONTHS, PER THEIR UNION CONTRACT. THEY WILL THEN RECEIVE SEVERANCE PAY BASED ON THEIR LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT.   IN A STATEMENT, KROGER SAID "AFTER EVALUATION OF THE EQUIPMENT AND LAYOUT OF THE PLANT, IT BECAME CLEAR THAT THE OUTDATED LAYOUT AND AGE OF THE EQUIPMENT WERE NO LONGER SUSTAINABLE FOR US TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE."    THE BAKERY ORIGINALLY OPENED IN COLUMBUS IN 1927. IT PRODUCED MORE THAN 130 MILLION POUNDS OF PRODUCT, INCLUDING COOKIES, CRACKERS AND BREAD.
