ARENA EVACUATED


THE NATIONWIDE ARENA AND SOME NEARBY BUILDINGS WERE EVACUATED, MONDAY AFTERNOON AFTER REPORTS OF A POSSIBLE GAS LEAK IN THE ARENA DISTRICT IN OHIO'S CAPITAL CITY.  THE COLUMBUS FIRE DEPARTMENT AND COLUMBIA GAS OF OHIO RESPONDED TO THE SITE JUST NORTH OF DOWNTOWN, SHORTLY AFTER NOON. COLUMBUS FIRE BATTALION CHIEF STEVE MARTIN TOLD THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH THAT SOME PEOPLE WALKING NEAR THE ARENA'S LOADING DOCK REPORTED SMELLING GAS.   THE POSSIBLE LEAK LED THE COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS HOCKEY TEAM TO CANCEL PRACTICE MONDAY.   THE EVACUATION WAS ORDERED AS A PRECAUTION. COLUMBIA GAS SPOKESMAN DAVE RAU SAID THE UTILITY SENT CREWS TO THE SCENE TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF THE ODOR AND DETERMINE IF THERE WAS A LEAK.
