WEST NILE


A SECOND PERSON HAS DIED HERE IN OHIO FROM THE WEST NILE VIRUS. A 74-YEAR-OLD MAN FROM MEIGS COUNTY DIED FROM THE MOSQUITO-BOURNE VIRUS. HE HAD INFLAMMATION OF THE BRAIN -- OR ENCEPHALITIS BECAUSE OF WEST NILE. LAST MONTH -- ANOTHER 74-YEAR-OLD MAN DIED IN DEFIANCE COUNTY. THIS YEAR -- THERE HAVE BEEN 23 PEOPLE REPORTED WITH THE VIRUS IN THE STATE. MOST PEOPLE WITH WEST NILE DO NOT HAVE SYMPTOMS...BUT 20-PERCENT OF PEOPLE WITH IT WILL DEVELOP A FEVER -- ALONG WITH SYMPTOMS LIKE A HEADACHE, JOINT PAIN, VOMITING OR RASH. LESS THAN ONE PERCENT DEVELOP ENCEPHALITIS OR MENINGITIS. MOSQUITO SEASON LASTS UNTIL THE FIRST FREEZE -- WHICH USUALLY HAPPENS IN MID-OCTOBER.
